The first U is lead in, Parenthesis are silent. The overall rhythm starts on 'and' of 4. Only listened to it for a 30 seconds or so, the variations are just addition syncopated motifs, as long as you hit the UDU to start, Just add extra Up strums.
Learn to count the beats. I just go in my head "1, 2, 3 ,4" and just figure it out from there. If it's on the 1,2,3 or 4, it's a down, if not it's up.
